Hurricane Irma Repairs and Reconstruction
Due to a ‘direct hit’ by the most powerful hurricane in St. Martin / St. Maarten’s history most of the our island sustained at least some damage. Many of the businesses have reopend and are better than ever! Others are in the rebuilding process and have announced their reopening dates for later this year - almost all before the start of our High Season.
All of our beautiful beaches are open! Cleanup was done almost immediately by the Nature Foundation and all debris in the water was removed by French side & Dutch side officials. Road conditions are good. There is no trouble driving anywhere on the island. Electric and Water service is normal. There are no issues with safety or security and you will see additional law enforcement on the island as both France & Holland sent more personnel as precautionary measures.
Beach Restaurants have (and are) reopening all around the island. Examples are Simpson Bay – Buccaneer & Karacter; Kokomo’s in Indigo Green; The Holland House in Philipsburg; Friar's Bay Beach Cafe and the newest opening is the brand new Bikini Beach on Orient Beach with Kontiki and Kakao to soon follow.
Most other areas of the island have lots of restaurants to chose from as well and most noteably, Maho is rebuilding to be brand new with exiting new restaurants, a completely rebuilt Casino Royale and shops and nightlife.
Perhaps what has affected our tourism the most is the lack of accommodations – the major hotels are still under reconstruction with both La Samanna and Maho Ocean Point scheduled to reopen in November 2018 BUT a great number of our famous Vacation Villas are open for business now! Princess Juliana Airport will be under reconstruciton for a year or two but it is operating very efficiently with temporary Departure and Arrival lounges and flights are being added everyday.
St. Maarten / St. Martin is Back! More and more of our loyal guests and friends are returning everyday and the island population is grateful and welcoming with open arms!
